RNIB Training Day at the Studio

April 7th, 2017

Yesterday, the team at Just Imagine were visited by David Watkins from RNIB (Royal National Institute of Blind People) to give us a seminar on understanding sight loss & the built environment. Their mission is to challenge blindness by empowering people who are blind & partially sighted, removing the barriers they face & helping to prevent blindness. In Wales, there’s an accreditation scheme for supported housing in Wales called Visibly Better, which ensures that the properties, services & staff are able to meet the needs of the growing population of people living with sight loss.

We got to do a few activities, such as using the above goggles which emulate different kinds of sight problems, such as Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma & Cataracts. We were challenged to walk around with a partner wearing the glasses as well as trying to pour a glass of water in a jug –  it was a lot more difficult than it sounds! It’s definitely a good activity to have for us designers to really put ourselves in the shoes of the residents that are partially sighted to see how the environments we design have an impact on wayfinding & visibility.
